This article shares general educational information, not a diagnosis or personalised clinical advice. A qualified professional can help you understand your child’s individual needs.

Depression can affect more than mood

Depression is a mental health concern that can affect how a person feels, thinks and manages everyday activities. Someone may describe ongoing low mood or loss of interest, while others first notice changes in energy, sleep, appetite, concentration or connection with people. Experiences differ, and a difficult week alone does not establish a diagnosis.

If changes persist, feel overwhelming or make it hard to manage daily life, consider speaking with a qualified mental health professional. An assessment can help understand the person’s circumstances and discuss appropriate support rather than relying on a checklist.

How to support someone you care about

Start with a specific, caring observation and ask an open question. Listen without minimising the person’s experience or insisting that they simply be positive. You can offer practical help, such as accompanying them to an appointment or checking in at an agreed time, while respecting their choices.

You do not have to become their therapist. Encourage professional support, and make space for your own wellbeing too. If you are unsure what to say, a simple message that you care and are willing to listen can be a meaningful beginning.

Finding professional support

A first appointment is an opportunity to discuss what has changed, how daily life is affected and what kind of support the person is open to. It is okay to ask about qualifications, confidentiality, the approach used and how progress will be reviewed. If the first professional or service is not the right fit, you can ask about other suitable options.

Avoid changing prescribed medication or stopping treatment based only on online information. Treatment decisions should be discussed with the qualified professional responsible for care.

If there is immediate risk

If someone may harm themselves or another person, or cannot stay safe, seek urgent help through local emergency services or the nearest emergency department. If you can do so safely, stay connected with them while help is arranged. A general article cannot replace urgent, individual support.

For ongoing non-urgent concerns, counselling and psychological assessment can help clarify needs and possible next steps. HOPE’s adult mental health services page provides information about support in Ahmedabad.
