This article shares general educational information, not a diagnosis or personalised clinical advice. A qualified professional can help you understand your child’s individual needs.

When worry starts affecting everyday life

Stress and worry are part of life, especially during uncertainty or change. Anxiety may deserve extra attention when it feels difficult to control, continues over time or begins to interfere with sleep, work, relationships or activities that matter to you. There is no single experience that applies to everyone.

People may notice persistent thoughts, restlessness, difficulty concentrating, tension or a tendency to avoid situations. These experiences can also have other causes, so a symptom list cannot diagnose anxiety. A qualified professional can help you explore what is happening in context.

Small steps that may support wellbeing

Some people find it useful to notice what tends to increase stress and to make one manageable adjustment, such as taking a short break, speaking with someone trusted or returning to a steady daily routine. Slow breathing or grounding exercises can feel helpful to some people; if an exercise feels uncomfortable, stop and choose another approach.

Try to set realistic expectations. Coping strategies are not a substitute for professional care when distress is persistent or severe, and finding one helpful practice does not mean you must handle everything alone.

What counselling can offer

A first counselling conversation can be a place to describe what has been difficult, how long it has been going on and what you would like to change. You can ask about the professional’s approach, confidentiality, session format and how you will review progress. It is reasonable to discuss whether a particular service feels like a good fit.

If physical symptoms are new, severe or worrying, consult an appropriate medical professional rather than assuming they are caused by anxiety. Mental and physical health both deserve careful attention.

Getting help in a crisis

If you may harm yourself or someone else, or you cannot keep yourself safe, contact local emergency services or go to the nearest emergency department. Reach out to a trusted person and seek urgent professional support; do not wait for symptoms to pass on their own.

For non-urgent concerns, speaking with a qualified counsellor or psychologist can help you consider next steps. HOPE provides adult counselling and psychological assessment information for people in Ahmedabad.
